  The struggle for one's identity has never been more fierce - every day and from every side we are confronted by messages designed to challenge what little certainty we have. Am I special? Should I be like everyone else? Is it okay to want to be more? We learn to be very careful about what we do and what we say, introspective to the last.
  
  So what a delight - and surely, what a comfort - to think that in this day and age a band like The Basics can survive and shine a little bit of light amid the darkness. Three (and now sometimes four!) young men in white shirts and black ties, no pretension in their words or doubt in their voices - their interest not in themselves, but in you (and me!) having a good time!
  
  Yes, when I first heard Wally, Kris and Tim playing their songs I didn't understand it and I didn't believe it either. It had to be some kind of cheap pastiche - another retrospective in-joke typical of today. Dancing at gigs? That only happens at covers venues! What do you mean there is no irony in their lyrics? And what's this about them wearing matching suits?
  
  It was, however, no great surprise when after a conversation with a friend I came to realise that my attitude was a direct result of the music that is hailed as 'great' in our times; music that drives us inside of ourselves, feeding an inner battle over the desire to be recognised as an individual vs. not wanting to appear self-involved. Standing out vs. fitting in - that teenage struggle that now never seems to be resolved.
  
  And letting down my guard, I then heard a band who were genuine and whose spirit rang true - a band eager to remind you that life is still good, and that you can still make a difference in this here world.
  
  Because despite what you might think at first, the thing about The Basics is that they are not living - or more specifically re-living - the 60s, or the 70s or even the 80s. Theirs are the sounds of today, a direct response to what the 21st Century has so far thrown at us.
